When runners get hit by cars

When a motorist strikes a runner, the consequences can be dire. As runners don’t have the benefit of a protective vehicle shell, the impact of such collisions is generally absorbed entirely by the victims who have been struck. As such, it’s not surprising that victims of these kinds of crashes often suffer serious injuries such as fractures, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, internal organ damage and severe lacerations.

Emergency medical care to treat injured runners can involve surgeries, intensive care and prolonged hospital stays. The reality of these injuries often necessitates ongoing medical treatment, physical therapy and rehabilitation, which can all be painful and costly.

Partially due to the traumatic nature of such collisions, and partially due to how challenging recovery from them can be, injured runners may be forced to weather significant emotional and psychological challenges in the wake of a collision as well. Survivors of such accidents may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression and a pervasive sense of vulnerability. Additionally, the fear of re-engaging in outdoor activities, such as running, can significantly impact a victim’s lifestyle and hobbies.

Addressing the legal and financial aftermath of a crash

In the financial aftermath of injurious crashes, victims may face mounting medical bills, costs of ongoing treatment and a potential loss of income due to an inability to work. These financial burdens can strain a victim and their family, leading to economic instability. Personal injury insurance claims and lawsuits are often pursued to seek compensation for these damages.

Before a victim can be awarded financial damages, negligence has to be established. Investigations are generally conducted to ascertain whether a motorist was negligent because they were driving under the influence, distracted while driving, speeding or otherwise failing to operate their vehicle safely.

Once the cause of the accident has been clarified, and the damages owed to the runner have been calculated, a legal team will begin negotiating for maximum compensation. If a fair settlement cannot be reached, pursuing litigation may be an appropriate response to a collision that has caused an innocent runner great harm.
